Passing of WRFU Life Member Brian Frederikson
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Brian Thomas Frederikson. Brian passed away peacefully after a short illness at the age of 89.
A former St Patrick’s College Silverstream star and talented first five-eighth, Brian was a gifted all-round sportsman who went on to make a significant contribution to Wellington rugby both on and off the field.
Brian contributed immensely to the Marist St Pats family and, earlier, to the St Patrick’s College Old Boys RFC. He was one of the most valuable players in Wellington club rugby throughout the 1950s and 1960s, a skilful, well-balanced player with a powerful kick on either foot.
He debuted for the Wellington Lions in 1956, becoming Lion #1032, and went on to represent Wellington with distinction. Among the highlights of his playing career was the famous 23–6 victory over the Springboks in 1965, one of Wellington’s most memorable wins. Brian was also a New Zealand Under 21 Colt in 1955, touring Sri Lanka alongside future All Black captains and legends Sir Wilson Whineray and Sir Colin Meads. He was an All Black trialist from 1956 to 1958.
Following his playing days, Brian continued to give back to the game as a respected coach and administrator. He served as Wellington representative team manager for nine seasons, including during the team’s National Provincial Championship and Ranfurly Shield double in 1981.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Brian was made a Life Member of both Marist St Pats RFC and the Wellington Rugby Football Union, receiving his WRFU Life Membership in 2005. He also served as President of Marist St Pats from 1992 to 1993.
The Wellington Rugby community extends its deepest condolences to the extended Frederikson family and friends.
