Safeguarding
Keeping children and vulnerable people safe is a core responsibility of the Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU). We are committed to providing a fun, positive and protective environment for every Small Black and person involved in our game.
Our Safeguarding Children & Young People Policy sits within New Zealand Rugby’s Safe Clubs Safe Kids framework. This programme provides clear guidance on preventing harm, recognising concerns, and responding appropriately to possible abuse, neglect or wellbeing issues.
Every season more than 88,000 Small Blacks take the field. Creating a safe environment for them is a shared responsibility across coaches, volunteers, parents, administrators and supporters.
How Safeguarding Works in Rugby
- Safe Clubs Safe Kids is NZR’s national child protection programme
- All Provincial Unions (including WRFU) have safeguarding policies and trained Child Protection Advisors (CPAs)
- Clubs are encouraged to adopt their Provincial Union’s safeguarding policy
- NZR police vets all junior coaches as part of the programme
- The framework and guidelines were developed with support from NZ Police and national sporting organisations
