Senior Rugby (Club Competitions)

The Senior Rugby section brings together the key information, policies and resources needed to administer senior grades across Wellington. This includes competition by‑laws, eligibility rules, operational documents, health and safety requirements, and guidance for club administrators, coaches, managers and volunteers. Everything is grouped in one place to support consistent, safe and high‑quality senior rugby experiences.
2026 Key Season Dates & Timelines
Senior Rugby follows a defined annual structure to support consistent scheduling, competitive balance and smooth coordination across all clubs. This includes:
- Season start and finish dates
- Start: Saturday 4 April (Premier & Premier 2 Men), Saturday 11 April (remaining grades) | Finish: Late-July/August (dependant on grade)
- Festival days and key events
- Club Finals Day: Saturday 25 July (venue to be confirmed following Stakeholders Council endorsement)
- Club Sevens: Late-October/November (dates and venues to be confirmed following Stakeholders Council endorsement)
- Deadlines for team entries, withdrawals and updates
- Friday 6 March, for draws to be circulated the following week

Postponements & Cancellations
Weather, field closures and safety factors can occasionally impact Senior Rugby. This process ensures decisions are timely and consistently communicated across all competitions:
- How and when decisions are made:
- WRFU will make postponement/cancellation decisions as early as possible, with field availability assessments completed in conjunction with councils
- For Saturday matches, decisions will be confirmed no later than 7:00am on Saturday mornings
- Decisions prioritise player safety, field preservation and competition integrity
- How decisions are communicated:

- Senior matches may be rescheduled where competition structures allow
- Matches may have cancellations without rescheduling, depending on field availability, the stage of the competition and overall competition requirements
- Any rescheduled matches will be communicated directly to clubs
