Season Structure

Cancellations
Weather and field conditions can occasionally impact Junior Rugby fixtures. The following process ensures decisions are made early and communicated clearly to clubs and whānau:
- How and when decisions are made:
- WRFU will make cancellation decisions as early as possible, and no later than 7:00am on Saturday mornings
- Decisions prioritise player safety, field preservation and consistent application across grades
- How decisions are communicated:
WRFU will communicate cancellations through:- Direct contact with Junior Convenors
- Push notifications to all participants via Rugby Xplorer
- Updates posted on WRFU social media channels
- Where cancellations or postponements are posted
- Junior Draws & Results page
- WRFU Facebook page
- Rescheduling
Junior fixtures are generally cancelled rather than rescheduled, unless exceptional circumstances apply
Clear guidance ensures clubs respond consistently and confidently, helping families plan their weekends.
Grade Structures
Zonal Grades - Year 0/1 to Year 6
Junior grades from Year 0/1 to Year 6 play within their own year group and within one of three zones:
- City
- Hutt Valley
- Western Bays
WRFU will aim to schedule crossover zone byes where possible to maximise rugby opportunities and ensure teams receive a balanced playing experience.
Regional Grades – Year 7 & 8
Year 7 and 8 grades play regionally rather than zonally. These grades use a divisional structure to help maintain competitive balance and reduce the likelihood of score blowouts.
