Passing of Jim Mei

Wellington Rugby is saddened to learn of the passing of former Wellington Lion James Ronald (Jim) Mei, Lion #1267.

Born on 17 May 1957, Jim was a prop who represented Wellington with distinction during the 1980s.

Jim made his Wellington debut on 18 May 1983 against New Zealand Services/Combined Services, having been selected from the Wellington club. He went on to play 18 matches for Wellington A, along with a further eight first-class matches.

His rugby achievements also included representing New Zealand Māori in 1987.

Jim’s contribution to the Wellington rugby community continues to be recognised through the Hinaki Mei Axe, an interclub trophy contested between Upper Hutt Rams and Wellington.

Wellington Rugby extends its sincere condolences to Jim’s whānau, friends, former teammates and the wider rugby community at this sad time.
