Wellington Rugby congratulates outside back Pepesana Patafilo as he takes the next exciting step in his rugby journey, signing on to play in Japan.

A proud product of the Tawa Rugby Football Club, Patafilo made his Lions debut against Hawke’s Bay in Napier in August 2019. He went on to play 50 matches for Wellington, scoring 16 tries and playing a key role in the Lions’ Ranfurly Shield triumph in 2022, as well as NPC Championship titles in 2022 and 2024.

“Always dreamt of becoming a Lion, and being able to reach 50 games for this team was special,” Patafilo said. “To win the Ranfurly Shield and Championship is definitely up there with my best rugby memories. Thank you to the Lions and fans for backing me can’t wait to support the boys.”

Known for his versatility, Patafilo consistently delivered impact across the Lions’ backline whether on the wing or in the midfield.

New Zealand-born and of Samoan heritage, Patafilo is a dynamic rugby talent who has showcased his skills at every level of the game. From grassroots and provincial rugby to development with the Hurricanes, high-performance environments with the Crusaders, and most recently representing Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby, he brings flair, vision, and cultural pride to every jersey he wears. He also represented Samoa at the Under-20 level in 2015.

Wellington Rugby wishes Pepesana all the best for his time in Japan and thanks him for his commitment, professionalism, and unforgettable contribution to the Lions jersey.

Fa’afetai lava, Pepesana — you’ll always be part of the Lions whānau.
