Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU) is proud to celebrate the historic appointment of former Black Fern Erin Rush as the first female President of New Zealand Rugby.

Rush, Black Fern #113, was officially confirmed as NZR President for the next two years following a vote by NZR’s Affiliate Members, after becoming the organisation’s first female Vice President in 2024. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for rugby in New Zealand and reflects the continued growth and contribution of women across all levels of the game.

WRFU CEO Tony Giles says the appointment is a proud moment for Wellington Rugby and the wider rugby community.

“Erin’s contribution to rugby, both on and off the field, has been extraordinary. She has broken barriers throughout her career and continues to lead with passion, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the game. Everyone at Wellington Rugby is incredibly proud to see her become New Zealand Rugby’s first female President.”

Rush’s rugby journey began in Wellington with Western Suburbs Rugby Football Club before she moved to Wellington Rugby Football Club, where she spent eight seasons and captained the side to multiple Victoria Trophy titles and sevens tournament victories.

She later became a founding member of the women’s team at Old Boys University Rugby Football Club, playing more than 50 matches for the club.

Wellington Football Club remained a spiritual home for Rush, where she has served as a Junior Convenor, Committee Member, Vice President, Long Service Cap Recipient and Life Member.

A longstanding Wellington Pride representative and captain, Rush has also contributed extensively through various union committees and panels. She became the first female President of the Centurions Club and continues to serve on its committee today. In recognition of her impact on the women’s game, the WRFU Best & Fairest Female Player of the Year Award is named in her honour.

Following her playing career, Rush continued to serve the game as the first female citing commissioner appointed by New Zealand Rugby before later undertaking the role for World Rugby.

NZR Chair David Kirk acknowledged Rush’s contribution to the game and leadership within NZR.

“Erin has been a wonderful ambassador during her time as Vice President. Her confirmation as President aligns with the continuing growth and contribution of women in rugby, and we know she will keep representing both NZR and the game with distinction.”

WRFU congratulates Erin on this landmark achievement and looks forward to seeing her continue to shape the future of rugby in New Zealand.
