Covid-19 Update: Hygiene and Sanitation Guidance for Sports Facilities

Below is a message from Sport New Zealand:

Any sporting clubs or recreation facilities that intend to open to members within Alert Level 3 and 2 must ensure they are protecting any visitors and minimising the risk of spread of infection. 

Before you open your facility you need to comply with the relevant Health and Safety requirements for COVID-19.  This information can be found at Worksafe’s website.

At all alert levels, clubs and facilities need to meet all public health guidelines. These include the following, although they may change over time:

  • Regular disinfecting of surfaces.
  • Encouraging good hand hygiene by allowing frequent hand washing and sanitising.
  • Not permitting unwell people within your facility.
  • Meeting physical distancing requirements.

Advice on Contact Tracing

Contact tracing is the identification of individuals that have come into contact with people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and it is a fundamental precaution taken against the spread of the virus in the community.

This advice provides guidance to sporting clubs and recreation facilities on their responsibilities to retain certain information from people to assist the Ministry of Health if contact tracing is required. Parts of some facilities will be able to open at Alert Level 3, for example outdoor golf courses, outdoor croquet clubs and outdoor bowling clubs.

Other sporting clubs or recreation facilities should familiarise themselves with these requirements for when they are able to open in lower alert levels.


Health and Safety Requirements for Businesses Planning to Open

Worksafe has advised that under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 all businesses that are permitted to resume operations need to have a safety plan that sets out how they’ll operate safely. This includes any play, active recreation and sport businesses that may be able to operate under the strict level 3 requirements.

The purpose of this health and safety planning is to ensure: effective implementation of COVID-19 controls, and that the health and safety of workers and other people isn’t put at risk from changes that are made to work arrangements because of this pandemic.

Before work begins again, business owners and operators need to develop a plan for working safely. This plan needs to be discussed and shared with everyone at work – including workers, contractors, and suppliers – before the work starts.
