Centurions Coaching Game

On 31 March a Centurions XV played their first game of the season in its secondary schools coaching programme. This was against Hutt International Boys' School and was also used as a 1st XV trial.

There was a good turnout of older players from Centurions, keen to get the season underway, and they were very impressed with the standard displayed.  Mike Russell commented that HIBS have come a long way since their first match against a Centurions team five years ago. They were also very happy with the boys' response to the coaching aspect of the match.

Tracy Smith, the HIBS coach, was delighted with the outcome. The HIBS players were looking forward to the match and thoroughly enjoyed it. The knowledge passed on by the Centurions will make the HIBS players all the better in the future.

The game also had a family touch with Tracy Smith playing against his sons, Jackson and Wiremu. As well Graeme Purvis was playing with his 20 yr old Sam Purvis (OBU), and against his 15 yr old son, HIBS player Mitchell.

Hope Tournament 2010

The competing teams are the 1st XV's from HIBS, HVHS, Naenae College, St Bernard's College (and their 2nd XV), Taita College, Upper Hutt College and Wainuiomata High School.

Promotion of Club Rugby

With the club season now started, it is appropriate to outline the many ways in which club rugby in Wellington is being promoted this season.

The WRFU website  will be constantly updated with news, previews, reviews, results and events.

Club Weekly will continue to run this year, with team lists being uploaded Friday mornings to both the WRFU website and the Club Weekly website. However, this season we are not printing any hard copies of the Club Weekly. If clubs would like hard copies to distribute on a Saturday, they can download the pdf file from the WRFU website under the News section. Supporters can download the file before the game as well.

Newstalk ZB (1035AM) will be running the Saturday Rugby Club with commentaries from the feature game of the week, as well as the ‘Round the Ground' segment to keep everyone up to date with what is happening on fields all around Wellington on a Saturday afternoon.

The Dominion Post will once again be providing coverage of all premier club rugby with a wrap-up of the weekend games on a Monday, including the Billy Wallace Best and Fairest points tally.

Wellington Rugby is also now on Facebook. The Official Wellington Rugby Page is the place to go where you will be updated with club rugby results, up to the minute club rugby news and premier team announcements, photos, draws and your comments and interclub banter. Sign up today to keep up to date.

You can also access us on Twitter.

What are the rules?

Have the last two years left you confused and dazed over the rugby laws? Well you are not alone!
So this year the referees were asked for some information to help clarify what you will see on the field on any given Saturday.
This document outlines which ELV's have been adopted as law for the 2010 season, and talks about SANZAR's much publicised law interpretations and their four priority areas.

Registrations

Now that club rugby has started, everyone is reminded that all players must be registered before they take the field, as per By-Law 8.1. The registration forms are available on the WRFU website.

Gaming Trusts

Figures released recently show that some $2 billion was spent on all gambling in New Zealand for the year ended 30 June 2009. This was 0.3% less than the previous year, but the figures were skewed by Lotto takings which were up 17%. This was because of record sales for two "unusually large Powerball and Big Wednesday jackpot draws".

Spending on gaming machines in pubs and clubs dropped 5.3%, but remained the top choice for gamblers, taking in $889 million.
A Gaming Trust Funding Workshop was recently held by Sport Wellington. Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it should any further information be required.

The Answer - for the Trivia Fan

Pat Vincent, from Canterbury, who was half-back and captain for the first two tests in the home series against South Africa in 1956. This season was described as "a winter of war", as the country sought revenge for the 1949 whitewash humiliation of the All Blacks in South Africa (lost 0 - 4). The All Blacks finally won this 1956 series 3 - 1.

The Doug Caldwell Trio was the backing group on many of Pat's records, but he was also associated with the Chuck Fowler Quartet.
