The new idea of playing six U7 and U8 games at half time during the Wellington Lions v Otago home game was a great success, with both the crowd and children thoroughly enjoying the event.

Trials are underway for the Wellington U13 Development programme, and will run for three more Sundays before the two teams (Restricted and Open) will be selected to start their comprehensive programme.

Centurions RFC - Appointment of Bill Brien as Patron

Wednesday 22 July saw Centurion Club members gather at their clubrooms in the Stadium to celebrate the appointment of Bill Brien as their first Patron. There was a very large turnout of members and partners that tested the capacity of the rooms.

Mick Bremner gave an outline of Bill’s contribution to the club and his almost endless list of achievements. No one present could have failed to have been impressed.

President John Burrows presented Bill with his Patron’s badge, and the first of our newly designed ties. He then unveiled a portrait of Bill which now adorns the clubrooms. Bill responded in his usual completely modest manner.

Members spent an enjoyable time congratulating Bill and socialising. This was a well deserved honour for a loyal and popular club member.

The Answer – for the Trivia Fan

A whistle and a coin. This tradition was started at the opening game of the first Rugby World Cup in 1987 in New Zealand. It has been carried on since at World Cups in 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003. It is expected these two items will be used for the first game of the 2011 Tournament in New Zealand.

The background of the whistle and coin can be read at:
