Club Committees are now in full swing for the winter. For some, as the chaos of the season descends, it sometimes feels hard to get on top of things. So how can your committee be most effective this year? What are some areas to concentrate on, to most benefit your club?
Read more about:
· Looking after your volunteers (that includes you!).
· Streamlining meetings.
· Communicating to members (and then communicate again!).
· Being good sports.
· Thinking ahead.

Presentations from this Forum, as mentioned in Team Talk 28, are available now.

Trials will be held in Hutt Valley, Wellington City and Western Bays. Nomination forms were sent to College Rugby Administrators on 13 May. They are due back to WRFU by 27 May to allow sufficient time for processing, selecting trial teams and advising the players.
From these trials the top 100 players are selected to attend Williment Week (13 to 16 July). After Williment Week, the WRFU Under 16A and Development teams will be selected to play in the Hurricanes Region Tournament in September.
Please contact Rick Whatarau at WRFU (021 228 2129) if any further information is required.

Several colleges are still trying to get coaches for some teams. An example is St Bernards U65 team – they are desperately in need of a coach. Can you help, either there or at another college?
Please contact Rick Whatarau at WRFU (021 228 2129) if any further information is required.

The season commenced a little shakily what with Easter, Anzac Day and inclement weather but, thanks to the Zone Convenors and their committees, all that was overcome.
Zones are now in the process of selecting Representative Teams in readiness for the JRZE Interzone Tournament in July. The JRZE Committee is Dale Wall (Chairman), Adrian Middleton (Western Bays), Gus McMillan (Hutt Valley), David Forster (Wellington), and Murray Sullivan (Junior Administration Officer). Thanks to WRFU for their valuable assistance with advertising and packs for registrations, plus running courses. Also thanks to the Hurricanes who attended the first Registration Day at the clubs – this was a great success.

We have been contacted by Lyndsay Cresswell, who is “a huge Rugby Tie Collector based in Auckland, but previously played representative rugby in Christchurch.” His “current collection boasts over 300 rugby ties from New Zealand and over the world, most of these have been donated generously by rugby clubs.”
Please let William Strang at WRFU (021 278 8015) know if you are interested in making certain that Lyndsay has your tie included in his collection, and we will pass on his contact details.

We have mentioned before the need to make certain all your administrators and volunteers have registered this year. Are all your committee registered?
Rugby New Zealand 2011 (RNZ 2011) has indicated that it will be developing specific offers for the New Zealand rugby community and that it expects that any such offer will be made to players, referees, coaches, volunteers and administrators registered for the 2009 season. Please note that as RNZ 2011 is still developing the ticketing strategy, this indication of the availability of specific offers is not a binding commitment by RNZ 2011 to make an offer of Rugby World Cup tickets, and any offer that is made in no way guarantees access to tickets.
If you would like to receive any information from RNZ 2011 about the Rugby World Cup 2011, you must make sure you tick the box on the registration form. If you have any questions, please contact Kirsty Wanden.
This registration form is available on-line.
Any player who has had to leave the field because of a head injury or suspected concussion, must have a compulsory three week stand-down period. That player must only be allowed to play again after a medical clearance.
Garratt Williamson had his first Rebel Sport Super 14 refereeing appointment last weekend (16 and 17 May). Garratt was in Bloemfontein for the Cheetahs v Stormers game.
Chris Pollock will referee a Rugby World Cup qualifying match in June, as well as officiate in games at the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan in the same month. Chris has been selected onto the IRB Referee Development Panel.
Associate Referee courses are underway. Clubs are encouraged to have members attend these courses so games can proceed in the event that a referee is not appointed, or fails to turn up. Associate Referee accreditation allows you to referee any level of rugby as long as scrums are conducted under NZRU Domestic Safety Law Variation conditions.
- Wednesday 20 May – upstairs Lounge Bar, Petone Working Men’s Club, 47 Udy St, Petone
o 6:00pm to 6:30pm – NZRU Rugby Smart safety presentation
o 6:30pm to 8:00pm – Associate Referee course
Further courses are to be held in Wairarapa-Bush on 27 May and 3 June, and can be scheduled around the Wellington region.
Â
Awarding of Free Kicks when the ball becomes unplayable at a tackle, ruck or maul applies only to SANZAR controlled Rebel Sport Super 14 rugby.
Current rugby law determines that a scrum should be awarded when the ball becomes unplayable at tackle, ruck or maul!

Clubs and schools have been advised that all WRFU registered rugby coaches will once again receive a complimentary Air New Zealand Cup season pass in recognition of the fine contribution being made to the game in Wellington at junior, secondary school and senior club level during the 2009 season.
To be a recipient of a season pass, a coach must be appropriately registered on the NZRU StayInFront Registration Database for the 2009 season with either a club or secondary school by 1 June 2009. A significant number of coaches are already registered; however for those still to do so, please ensure this is completed urgently.
The Air New Zealand Cup season pass entitles the bearer to attend six home round robin fixtures at Westpac Stadium. Details regarding distribution will be confirmed shortly.
Should you have any further queries in regard to this matter please do not hesitate to contact WRFU Assistant RDO, Rick Whatarau (021 228 2129).
