Otago men and Canterbury women have booked themselves a place in the annual Pub Charity National Sevens next year after taking out their respective Finals in the Southern Regional Sevens Tournament held in Timaru today.
The tournament is the first of three regional tournaments to be held this year to determine which teams will qualify for the National Sevens in Queenstown on 12 and 13 January.
Canterbury beat Tasman 34 - 0 to win the women's Final and the Old Bank Cup, with Tasman also assured a place in the National Sevens.
Otago defeated Canterbury 34-21 in the men's Final to claim the Tofa Shield. Canterbury, Tasman, Southland and today's tournament hosts South Canterbury have also qualified for the men's National Sevens.
The Northern Regional Sevens Tournament will be held on 8 December in Auckland, and the Central Regional Sevens Tournament will be held on 15 December in Palmerston North. The women's Finalists in each of those tournaments will advance to the National tournament, while six men's teams from the Northern Tournament and five from the Central Region, will also qualify to head to Queenstown.
