Key Registration Dates

All Junior Rugby Clubs will hold a registration evening on the 14 February between 6pm - 7.30pm at their local club rooms. A Wellington Rugby player will be in attendance and everyone who signs up will get a FREE Leslie rugby ball. Further registration dates will be confirmed in the New Year.

Fairplay

Children play sport for fun. For some of them a part of that fun is in winning but for many the enjoyment comes from the opportunity to play, learn and compete with their peers.

To ensure that Wellington Junior Club Rugby is played as a fair and even competition that everyone can enjoy, the JRZE bans the:

  • stacking of teams (where a club has one or more teams in a grade, those teams must, as much as possible, be even in strength and ability),
  • poaching of players from other clubs.

Winning is good but a good game is better.

Grass Roots Stands for Respecting

Rules:
Don't bend the rules to win. Respect the letter and spirit of the rules.

Opponents:
A worthy opponent and a fair and competitive game will help you to achieve your best. Try your hardest to win, but not at the expense of demeaning your opponents.

Officials:
Treat officials with respect even when you disagree.

Teammates:
Rugby is a team sport. Never do anything that would embarrass your team.

Self:
Try to live up to your own standards regardless of what others do.

Children

Children can expect to enjoy their rugby and to be able to play it safely with children of similar age, size and ability. By the end of each season they should have learned all the skills needed for when they move up to the next grade in the following season.
Children can expect to:

  • Benefit from access to the best coaching and resources that the club is able to offer.
  • Be involved as much as the other children in their team and to contribute, to the best of their ability to each game.
  • Play in a fair and even contest.

Parents and Caregivers

As a parent or caregiver you can expect all of the above for your child and to gain as much enjoyment from the rugby as the children.

If you wish to become involved in coaching or helping out with a team or club, you should be given that opportunity too. Talk to your child's coach about his/her development, enjoyment and safety.

Remember that having signed up a child to play rugby; you have accepted a responsibility to the team, coach, club and all children playing Junior Club Rugby.
Enjoy your season and remember that if you have any questions, contributions or concerns, talk to the coach or those in your club that run the junior rugby programme.

Rules

The rules that we play under are modifications of the NZRU domestic laws (not Super 14 or international laws).

They are designed to allow for the development of skills according to a player's age and ability while ensuring the safety of all players.

To see a copy of these rules, ask your child's coach or read an overview here.
